At Kataba we offer expert tuition in the art of traditional Japanese sharpening at our premises in Pop Brixton. Knife makers use a wide variety of steels, grinds and constructions in their cutlery which require different approaches in the sharpening; we can show show you how to maintain all of your cutlery to maximise performance and preserve the integrity of the blade using a simple system used by Japanese Bladesmiths. Our classes are usually taught after hours in the evening from 18:30 - 20:00.
Group-Sharpening Class (£45 Per Person)
Our group sharpening class is a comprehensive instruction in the art of sharpening double bevel knives using whetstones. During this session we will teach all of the basic techniques of free-hand whetstone sharpening which will give the student the required understanding to maintain kitchen knives safely and effectively. The traditional method that we teach is a dexterity skill which requires frequent practice if is to be mastered but the basic method is quite simple to understand and implement. During this course we will provide all of the necessary equipment for sharpening but we recommend bringing a couple of your own knives along to practice with and your own sharpening stone if you already own one.
*It’s not suitable to bring damaged or heavily worn knives to this session

Private Sharpening Instruction (£65 Per Person, maximum of two students)
We offer private instruction for people interested in learning how to sharpen single bevel cutlery or for customers interested in advanced techniques like thinning and repair work. These sessions are bespoke to each customer allowing us to focus on key areas for development.
